SEO retainer cost by price tier
An SEO retainer is a fixed monthly fee for an agreed amount of ongoing SEO work. What that fee buys differs more between tiers than between agencies, so the table below matters more than any single average. The ranges are common US market ranges, not quotes.
| Monthly retainer | What it realistically pays for | Who it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Under 500 USD | Automated reports, a few on-page edits, little or no new content or links | Very small local businesses with almost no competition |
| 500 to 1 500 USD | Technical fixes, 1 to 3 pages or refreshes, local SEO, a few links | Local services and early sites in low-competition markets |
| 1 500 to 3 500 USD | Strategy, regular fixes, several pages and refreshes a month, steady editorial links | Early SaaS, single stores, professional firms, lead generation |
| 3 500 to 7 500 USD | A broader content program, more links, AI search work, competitor analysis, a second market | Scaling SaaS and e-commerce companies |
| 7 500 to 12 000 USD | Multi-market programs, international SEO, digital PR, CRO, category programs | Multi-market, high-ticket and aggressive growth |
| Above 12 000 USD | Many sites, large catalogs, migrations, release reviews, security requirements | Enterprise and regulated teams |
If a quote sits far below the scope it promises, something is missing. Usually it is original content or real link building, the two most expensive parts of the work. Our guide to search engine optimization cost covers hourly and project pricing as well.
What a monthly SEO retainer should include
A retainer is only comparable to another retainer when each line has a number next to it. "Ongoing optimization" is not a deliverable. Ask every agency to fill in this list.
| Line item | What to ask for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Strategy | A written roadmap for the next 90 days and monthly priorities | Shows the agency has a plan for your site, not a template |
| Technical SEO | A fix list and how many fixes are implemented each month, and by whom | An audit nobody implements changes nothing |
| New content | Number of new pages or articles per month, with length and review steps | Content is the main driver of new rankings |
| Content refreshes | Number of existing pages updated per month | Often the fastest wins on a site with history |
| Link building | Number of editorial links per month, with source, target and anchor reported | Links are where cheap packages cut corners first |
| Tracking | Number of priority keywords tracked and whether AI answers are monitored | Defines what "progress" will be measured against |
| Reporting | A monthly report tied to revenue or leads, not only rankings | Rankings without revenue are a vanity metric |
| Communication | Who you talk to and the reply time | A shared strategist with a 2 day reply time is fine if it is stated |
Two items are often billed outside the retainer: link placements and software subscriptions. Ask whether both are inside the monthly fee. If links are extra, find out how they are sourced, because paid placements on link farms put the site at risk. Our link building services page describes what an editorial link looks like and how each one is reported.
Retainer vs project vs hourly vs performance pricing
The retainer is the most common model, but it is not the only one, and the right choice depends on the job.
| Model | Common range | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | 500 to 12 000 USD or more per month | Ongoing growth where content, links and fixes are needed every month | Vague scope and long minimum terms |
| One-time project | 1 000 to 10 000 USD or more | Audits, migrations, a defined batch of pages | No one implements or maintains the result |
| Hourly consulting | 75 to 200 USD per hour | Teams that execute in-house and need senior advice | Hours grow, output is hard to predict |
| Performance-based | A fee per ranking or per lead | Rarely a good fit | Incentive to chase easy keywords or use risky tactics |

Contract terms that change the real price
Two retainers with the same monthly fee can differ by tens of thousands of dollars over a year once the terms are counted.
- Minimum term. A 12 month minimum at 3 000 USD is a 36 000 USD commitment made before any work is delivered. Month-to-month terms move the risk to the agency.
- Setup or onboarding fee. Often one extra month of fees. Ask what it pays for that the first month does not.
- Notice period. Thirty to sixty days of notice means one or two more invoices after you decide to leave.
- Auto-renewal. Some agreements renew for a further full term unless cancelled in a narrow window. Put the renewal and notice dates in your calendar, or in the contract management software your finance team already uses, on the day you sign.
- Ownership. Content, links, accounts and data should belong to you from day one, including after cancellation.
- Access. The agency should work with read-only analytics access and a limited CMS role, in accounts that you own.
None of these terms is unusual, and a minimum term is not automatically a bad sign. It becomes one when the scope is vague, because then you are locked into paying for work you cannot measure.
How to compare two retainer quotes
The simplest method is to divide the fee by what is delivered. Take the monthly deliverables from each quote, assign rough market values, and see what is left over for strategy, reporting and management.
A worked example with a published plan: the AgencySEO Growth plan costs 3 500 USD per month and includes 6 new pages, 4 content refreshes, 6 editorial links and up to 25 implemented technical fixes, with tracking for 100 keywords and AI search visibility. If you price a professionally written and edited page at 300 to 500 USD and an earned editorial link at 300 to 600 USD, the pages and links alone account for roughly 3 600 to 6 600 USD of market value before any strategy or technical work. Run the same sum on any quote you receive.
- List the monthly numbers for pages, refreshes, links and fixes from each quote. If a quote has no numbers, ask for them in writing.
- Add the one-time costs: setup fee, minimum term, notice period.
- Divide the total first-year cost by the total first-year deliverables.
- Check who does the work: named roles, or an unnamed "team".
- Ask to see a sample monthly report before you pay. Ours is public on the sample SEO report page.

Red flags in a cheap monthly SEO package
Low prices are not the problem. Low prices attached to large promises are.
- A guaranteed position or a guaranteed number of first-page keywords. Nobody controls Google.
- Dozens or hundreds of links per month for a few hundred dollars. Those are directory, comment or network links.
- A package described by hours instead of outputs.
- Content that is clearly unedited machine output with no named reviewer.
- The agency insists on owning your analytics, Business Profile or domain.
- No price until after a sales call, then a different price for each caller.
The damage from a bad cheap retainer is rarely the fee itself. It is the six to twelve months lost and, in the worst case, a link cleanup afterward.
