Month to month vs 6 and 12 month SEO contracts

The monthly fee is only part of the cost. The real commitment is the fee multiplied by the months you cannot leave, plus the notice period and any setup fee. The table uses a 3 000 USD monthly fee as an example, a common price for a small or mid-sized company.

TermMoney committed before you can leaveTypical noticeWho carries the risk if results stall
Month to month3 000 USD, one monthNone, or until the next billing dateThe agency, because you can stop paying next month

6 month minimum18 000 USDOften 30 days after month sixMostly you
12 month contract36 000 USDOften 30 to 60 days, sometimes auto-renews for a yearYou

A minimum term is not automatically a bad sign. It becomes one when the scope is vague, because you are then locked into paying for work you cannot count. A month-to-month plan with a clear monthly list of deliverables puts the burden of proof on the agency, where it belongs.

Why most SEO agencies ask for 6 to 12 months

There are honest reasons and less honest ones, and it helps to know which you are hearing.

  • Results take time. New pages and links usually need three to six months to move rankings. This is true, but it is a reason for you to plan to stay six months, not a reason to be unable to leave if nothing ships.
  • Sales and onboarding cost. Agencies that sell through calls, proposals and custom audits spend a lot before the first invoice. A long contract recovers that cost. Agencies that sell a published plan online carry less of it.
  • Front-loaded work. The first month often has the most technical work. A fair answer is a one-time setup fee that says what it pays for, not a year of lock-in.
  • Churn protection. Some agencies know that a share of clients would leave by month four. A contract keeps that revenue whether or not the work is good.

If an agency asks for a year, ask what you get in month one, two and three, in countable units. If the answer is "strategy and onboarding", ask to see the roadmap before you sign.

Clauses that turn a no contract plan into a long one

"No contract" in an ad and month-to-month in the agreement are not always the same thing. Read the terms for these items before you pay.

  • Notice period. A 60 day notice clause on a monthly plan is a two month minimum by another name.
  • Setup or onboarding fee. One extra month of fees is common. It should list what it covers, such as an audit, a roadmap and the first fixes.
  • Auto-renewal into a term. Some plans start monthly and convert to an annual term after a trial period unless you opt out.
  • Rented links and hosted content. Cheap providers sometimes place links on sites they control or host your content on their platform, then remove it when you cancel. Your rankings drop the month after you leave.
  • Account ownership. Search Console, GA4, your Business Profile and your domain must stay in your name. An agency that owns them can make leaving painful.
  • Prepaid discounts. An annual prepay discount is reasonable, but check whether unused months are refundable before you choose it.

Because a month-to-month fee can stop any month, it is easy to treat SEO as one line in a rolling marketing budget and review it each month, the same way you would review ad spend. If finance already plans spend in business budgeting software, add the fee there with a review date three months out.

What monthly SEO services should deliver each month

A monthly plan is only easy to leave if you can tell whether it is working, and that starts with numbers on the invoice. Ask for each line below in writing.

Technical fixesHow many fixes are implemented each month, and by whomA change log with URLs and dates
New pagesHow many new pages or articles per month, and the target search for eachLive URLs in the monthly report
RefreshesHow many existing pages are updated per monthBefore and after versions
Editorial linksHow many links per month and how they are earnedSource page, target page and anchor for each link

How to judge month to month SEO in the first 90 days

Rankings take months, but delivery and early signals show up much sooner. Use this as a checklist before each renewal date.

By the end ofYou should seeCancel signal
Month 1A written roadmap, the first technical fixes live, the first page drafts approvedNo roadmap, or fixes only "recommended" and never implemented
Month 2New pages indexed in Search Console, the first editorial links reported with URLsDeliverables below the number in your plan
Month 3Rising impressions for the target searches, the first clicks to new pagesNo movement in impressions on any new page, and no explanation
Month 6Clicks and leads from organic search, positions improving for priority keywordsRankings flat and the plan for the next quarter repeats the last one

A good agency on a monthly plan will welcome this review, because it is how it keeps clients. If you are still choosing between providers, the list of questions to ask an SEO agency helps you test this before you buy.

Who month to month SEO suits

Monthly terms fit most small and mid-sized companies, and they fit some better than others.

  • Professional practices with seasonal demand, such as CPA firms that need pages live before tax season. See our program for SEO for accounting firms.
  • Regulated firms where every page needs compliance approval and the pace depends on the reviewer, such as RIAs and planners. See SEO for financial advisors.
  • SaaS and e-commerce teams that want to test an agency for a quarter before moving more budget into SEO.
  • Companies leaving a 12 month contract that did not deliver and do not want to repeat it.

Monthly terms suit you less if you want the lowest possible price and are sure you will stay a year. Then an annual prepay discount can be the cheaper route.
